A Zine About Singapore (circa 2021)

Anna Onni

Hello Fellow Earthlings!

If you've stumbled onto this site it is likely that you a) know me even just a little b) received a little note with a QR code linking you to this post.

This was a zine I made last year. Currently working on another one made with magazine and museum exhibition clippings, but this one still feels more hopeful.

I'm currently in the library@orchard zine-making community - Zzzink!

There's tons of encouragement for us to make whatever feels right and makes sense for us. I really appreciate the space that this has opened up for me.

I make messy and scrappy art in my spare time because it makes me feel able to be myself again. If that makes sense. I'm reeling from a few things happening in the world and in my own emotional space, but the crafting helps me to focus and breathe. Too tense and the lines don't come out right. Too anxious and the writing becomes cynical and biting and unreadable even to myself.

At the beginning of this year I wrote out Joy Harjo's poem "For Calling the Spirit Back from Wandering the Earth in Its Human Feet" into my "journal" for the year. Almost immediately after I started getting the advertisements for her MasterClass. Still wondering if I should sign up for a year's subscription - for now, my frequent enough trips to the library are keeping me from buying books and other subscriptions. Still, it is a little surreal to see a poet you associate with expansive spirituality in a sponsored advertisement.

I've wondered about the monetization and traveling power of creative work since I was a kid trying to figure out how to be an artist. With my current work, I will need to declare if I am getting a separate stream of income (no matter how small) - so I've come up with the compromise of getting "paid" in kind. With publications, I ask for an extra copy or for the money to be fed back into the publication's base costs. If you would like to receive more of my work I have been paid with meals (Turkish and Japanese food have been my favourite treats), a Dixit set, excuses for meeting up, or direct donations to causes I would like to support.

I'm hoping to start a mailer sometime soon to friends and strangers near and far away. If you would like to join, send me a little direct message at @annaonni on Instagram or an email to onniscient@gmail.com. If you would like to join the Zzzink community (or other National Library Board arts communities) come take a look here.

Thank you for stopping by.

Sending some hope and love into the world, Anna
